Crime and Social Justice No. 7 (1977)
Announcement (Spring 1977)
The Berkeley School of Criminology has been abolished and with it the only progressive program of study in criminology in the United States leading to a doctoral degree. We have had five good years. Our graduates are now teaching in various colleges and universities, and it is critical that we continue the program established in the School of Criminology to expand the base of progressive criminologists. We are delighted to announce the appointments of Tony Platt, Paul Takagi, and Herman Schwendinger as adjunct professors to Union Graduate School-West. Union Graduate School-West is a union of experimenting colleges and universities involved in the development of alternative forms of higher education leading to the Ph.D. degree. The program has been awarded Candidate for Accreditation Status by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Each student develops a program to suit his or her own needs, strengths, and opportunities. Each student is assisted and advised by fellow students, faculty, and other resource people. Emphasis is upon self-directed study. No credits are counted: rather, a whole program (involving concrete student projects) is evolved and evaluated. Tony Platt, Paul Takagi, and Herman Schwendinger will direct independent study in crime and social justice and related areas leading to the Ph.D. degree. Seminars with core faculty will also be required. The student program will vary in duration from a one-year minimum to a maximum of four years according to the internal logic and excellence of the study plan, past graduate experience, if any, and the personal abilities, commitments, and wishes of the student. Please ask for information about admission, tuition, program procedures, or other matters. Citation: Editors. (1977). "Announcement." Crime and Social Justice 7 (1977): 2.
